Down Hill From Here...

It seems that after Spring Break school just flies by. It was really nice to stay home and not have an agenda, though we all did wish for warmer weather and have been teased with the full spectrum here: Rain, Snow and Sunshine. The bulbs are trying to bloom but it really is too cold still. I have some bulbs popping up through my newly laid rock which reminds me that we can grow even in the most difficult of times.

We met with Morgan's diabetes doctor over break and found out that the latest A1C was 8.4%...Ouch. That is the highest it has been since diagnosis. I like to see it around 7%. I knew that it was going to be higher as we just had a heck of a time with glucoses playing basketball this year and being in a major growth spurt. Morgan is now about 6'2", but only weighs in at 150lbs and has actually lost a couple of pounds. We also found out that the hospital has closed down the local Diabetes education program. I have been trying to work with the ADA on becoming a family mentor, but they just do not seem to be very organized, either that or they don't want me on their team. This is a sensitive subject for me as when Morgan was diagnosed we got absolutely no education, except what my wonderful SIL Toni gave us over the phone, and what I dug up on the internet. I was hoping that this would be a way for me to help those who are struggling with a new diagnosis.

I have also been spending too darn much time planning this kitchen remodel. I have called contractors, but they don't seem to be too interested in such a 'small' project as they don't return phone calls.

The boys and I also added to the stairs in the garage. Pat has been telling me that he wanted to make the stairs bigger, but just didn't have the time. Yesterday the boys and I dug out the tools and lumber and went to work. It was great! Both boys are taking woodshop this semester and are able to measure, use a tri-square and even use the saw (with supervision). They loved it and it was great to surprise Pat when he got home with a 'new' addition.

Busy Times...

Once again we are in full swing of spring sports.  Both boys in track and Lucas also playing baseball.  I find it hard to post regularly so I am going to try posting once a week, with weekly highlights.   We have had some beautiful weather and have even set up the hammocks on the deck, which seems everyone loves to enjoy.

This past week marked our Anniversary.  St. Patrick's Day and I must say, Pat hasn't missed one yet!  19 years and still going strong.  We didn't do anything 'special' except go to Lucas' spring Choral concert.

The boys also had their first track meet of the season.  Lucas was in the 4X400 relay, high jump and long jump.  Morgan did the 100M, 200M, a relay (I can't remember which) and the long jump.  They both had a great time and did well.

I am also in the process of planning out a kitchen remodel.  Actually, I have been planning it for over a year and I think that this year is the year it will get done.  It has been so hard for me to make decisions regarding cabinets that I have just sat on it, until now.

We renovated our bathroom a couple of years ago and put in new cabinets there.  After weeks of trying to find a cabinet I really like for the kitchen I looked no further than the bathroom.  So now that we have decided on the kitchen cabinets, everything else is falling into place.   We have picked out flooring, counter tops for the perimeter and we are trying to decide what to put on the island/eating bar surface.  I really like the idea of wood, but Pat found some granite that he likes.  We will be doing some more research on that one.

Spring break has started for the boys and we will probably be sticking around here enjoying doing nothing, except celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord!  Have a wonderful Easter.

Sew Baby!

Morgan is taking FACS (What we old people used to call Home Ec.) this semester and is quite the teachers pet!  I ran into his teacher the other day and she said that he is her prize pupil and quite the seamstress.  Maybe he has a destiny awaiting him on Project Runway?  He kind of reminds me of Jay!

Modeling his newly minted apron.  I must admit the seams are quite good!

Tragedy

As the mom of a child with type 1 diabetes this type of story really scares the begeebies out of me. We have recieved several of these 'nomination letters' and have often wondered 'who did the nominating', but always toss them out.

Somogyi...

With all of the craziness of the winter months, basketball, basketball, rotten colds, basketball ( I think you get the picture) I have neglected downloading meter readings and pump information, for about....3 months ACK.  Well, I downloaded (or is it upload) his pump and was shocked at the blood sugar average...200+.  Time to hunker down and get cracking at some new settings.

It is hard to adjust his rates when he is so active, with sports and growing there is just no down-time to make adjustments and to be honest I just kept putting it off.  Until now.

Last night he went to bed with a decent number, 158, he had eaten and bolused  before he went to bed.  He did not have track after school, so I didn't worry about delayed hypoglycemia.  Maybe I should have.  When he woke up this AM, his blood sugar was 389.  Was it rebound?  My gut tells me it was, I woke up sometime last night and thought I should check him, but rolled over and went back to sleep.

I felt really angry this morning about it and someone told me 'he should be able to handle this, he is 14, cut the apron strings!'  I just let it slide, it is hard to explain to someone who doesn't really understand what it is like to live with this disease.  Morgan will have to live with this for the rest of his life, the least I can do is help him while he is here!

On  another note, Lucas has recovered from his bout of crud, a weekend of very high fever and 2 missed days of school.  Now Pat has it, he is in denial, he thinks its allergies!
